Newey Skirtmarker

What the…????? Yes this is a skirt marker, it does exactly as it says on the box. No, I don’t know either. Thing is, I bought it for the box cos it just looked inexplicable, but someone has defo used it. How accurate is it? It involved puffing some chalk dust out onto the skirt by some very complicated contraption, there is a measurement along the pole, but I keep wondering why? Why? Why? Anyway, I put it together to show you.
Dressmakers amongst you - don’t be jealous, even though I’m not sure what exactly it is, I’m fairly certain it’s rubbish. Another Community Shop, Armley purchase, and it definitely wasn’t more than £1. Are you surprised?

I spent what seemed like hours in the late 50’s/early 60’s during my childhood stood in front of a chalk puffing hemming device like you bought. O for the days when such detail was so important and an uneven hemline could speak volumes about the sort of girl/young woman you were! And for all that standing (usually on a table) it still didnt guarantee an even hemline!
A fantastic find!

Thank you Helen, you’ve explained everything in one simple post. I can now see why such a contraption would be so desirable. My confusion was as someone who only appeared in the mid (as I like to say) 60s and had a Mum who was too busy giving our books away (see other post) to bother with our hem lines. You are welcome to come and see the ‘real life version’ in action whenever you like, it really is a dichotomy - the box is definitely saying 50’s/60’s to me but then the thing itself is shouting 70’s, we’re talking orange plastic!
